Painting Like Nobody’s Business.

Monday, March 31, 2008

My entire body hurts. Lauren and I got an incredible amount of work done on the new place over the weekend; we hung blinds for 14 windows, painted the master bedroom and bathroom, replaced two bathroom light fixtures, and unloaded our 20 ft GoMini Storage Unit (Highly recommended if you’re moving soon).

Lauren catching me off-guard while I was edging our master bath.

For the record, it’s a huge blessing to have parents to help us out during this whole process. My mom acted as our Realtor during the buying process, and my Dad (incredible handyman) has taught us how to do so many things and done so much for us, it’s just ridiculous. I really don’t know how we could’ve done all of this without them.

The goal for tonight and the rest of the week is to put up ceiling fans, start putting the other rooms together, and paint the living room and kitchen. We’ll post up lots of before and after photos soon.

In closing, I’ll leave a few tips I’ve learned over the past few days…

Keep checking the blog throughout the week for more updates/insight ;-)

Today’s the Day!

Thursday, March 27, 2008

Well, we had our final walk-through yesterday and it looks like everything in our new place is finally fixed and ready to go. If all goes according to plan, we’ll be closing late this afternoon and putting up blinds early this evening!

Us in the UHaul

If I have any sort of extra time over the next week, I’m going to put together some sort of photo gallery section on the blog where we’ll post pictures of the new place along with our progress as we paint, change out light fixtures and get furniture moved into place (which we’ll probably do room to room). In the mean time, if there’s anything you guys want to see, post a comment and let us know and we’ll try to grab a photo for you.

By the way, does anyone have any experience installing track lighting? We’ve got a large fluorescent light fixture in the kitchen that we’re looking to replace with either normal track lighting or the pendant kind. I’ve put up ceiling fans and other light fixtures before, but track lighting freaks me out for some reason, so I’m wondering how hard that’s going to be.

Also, since we’re going to be without internet over the next few days, we would like to congratulate Robert and Ruth Ann Hutchison on the birth of Lydia Leigh Hutchison; that’s one cute baby.

Western Textplate

We’re one day away from moving into our house. It’s just now hitting me. If any of you know the situation, we actually signed for the house back in June. So, I’ve gone from being excited to disappointed to anxious back to disappointed, and now I’m excited again. To de-stress a little I like to make graphics I can use later in projects or just for fun. Here’s a little text plate/border you can download.

Feel free to use however you want. If this kind of thing is something you can use please let me know and I’ll continue to post them. Hope you guys are having a great Wednesday!

Two Days and Counting…

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

We’re “officially” two days away from closing on our new place after a good nine-month wait. The original plan was to close tomorrow, but we decided to wait a day and let our locked interest rate expire since it looks like rates have fallen some over the last few weeks.

Our new place!

As Lauren already mentioned, we had our semi-final walk-through last Wednesday where we spent a few hours pointing out flaws and learning about exciting stuff like insulation and cracks in the concrete (by the way, I feel very grown-up and old having gone through the home-buying process twice now… what on Earth?). We had noticed a few things in the house we were concerned about over the last few weeks, but the construction manager was really helpful and it looks like they’ve gone above and beyond trying to fix things and make things right. So far we’re much more satisfied with Centex than we ever were with the quality of our Beazer home.

Although we’re both stoked to get moved in, it’s just starting to hit us that we have tons of work to do on the house to make it feel like home; it’s exciting stuff at least, but painting isn’t fun anymore after the first few days. Our goal right now is to unpack our storage unit, get almost everything out of my parent’s house, hang blinds throughout the house, and paint our master bedroom and bathroom before the weekend’s up. We may be biting off a little more than we can chew for one weekend :-)

One final note… we finally got the replacement part for our Dyson in on Saturday, and WOW, that thing is crazy! You wouldn’t believe the stuff it pulls out of a carpet that we already thought was clean. Highly recommended!
